Uses of Enchantment: Vee Speers and The Jackson Twins

Hopefully you managed to make it down to our latest exhibition featuring Vee Speers and The Jackson Twins before it was time to bid them farewell. The exhibition, which ran for just under 3 months, proved to be a huge success, along with holding the honor of being our debut show in our Rhubarb East Gallery, Digbeth.

As a Rhubarb International Review regular, it’s been a great pleasure to have Vee Speers’ ‘The Birthday Party’ in the new gallery.

“Rhubarb has reached new levels. Every year, more diverse and challenging opportunities are offered to photographers whilst the professional, stressless and friendly atmosphere remains the same. Rhubarb was one of the key elements that kick-started my career in art photography.” – Vee Speers

Vee has also been selected to exhibit alongside Annie Liebovitz and Joel Peter Witkin in the premiere show at Fotografiska, Stockholme, where her work will be on show until September.

Meanwhile West Midlands boys, The Jackson Twins brought their fantasy themed work, based on fables and fairy tales, to the Rhubarb East Gallery and has proven to be a great success throughout The Uses of Enchantment exhibition.

“The (Jackson Twins) work displayed in this exhibition shows their unique ability to manipulate images, photographing scenes which have a filmic quality and creating a fantasy world through their bold use of colours and dramatic content.” – Wolverhampton Art Gallery

The Birmingham Post featured a review of the exhibition back in April, “All of the photos comes with a cryptic title which hints at a deeper meaning; an invisible narrative to go with the pictures.” – Lorne Jackson, Birmingham Post.

“Our work pays particular focus to ‘the twin’, what it is to be an identical being – to in essence, share an identity with your double. We explore the worldwide fascination with twins: in terms of the pop culture fixation of the ‘evil-twin’, the depths of the twin in folklore (the doppelganger) and the themes explored through psychology and psychoanalysis.” – The Jackson Twins (The Cataclysmic Accounts from The Binary Institute)

Rhonda Wilson, Creative Director of Rhubarb-Rhubarb, says, “For years we have watched while the sometimes extraordinary talent emerging from our programme of support and mentoring schemes, has been shown by other people, both in the UK and in international spaces. Now we have the pleasure of showing the results of our efforts, in collaboration with some of the world’s most interesting image makers. The first show is just fantastic and we have created a whole environment for the photographs. If you are into Alice in Wonderland, or even if you’re not – you will love to fall down this particular visual rabbit hole.”

With the exhibition now closed, we’re busy getting the Rhubarb East gallery ready for our next guests. Opening June 22nd, we are excited to present ‘Hungry’, Bursary 2010 Collision: Where Image Meets World.

If you managed to make it down to the exhibition or any of our recent events, please let us know what you thought!
